It was welcome news to many pensioners and our members when the Government announced a review of 2025’s Winter Fuel payment. Any pensioner earning up to £35,000 will be eligible. However, beware as scammers are already targeting pensioners sending texts telling them they need to apply for the payment. THIS IS NOT TRUE. The payment will be paid automatically to every pensioner even those with an income above £35k. The payment for those pensioners will be returned via the tax system.
Any text claiming to be from the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) is a scam. See below an example of a fraudulent text
“DWP Service Centre: You have not yet completed your application for an energy subsidy for 2024-2025. The subsidy is £300. It is important that you submit your application by 10 June. Late applications will not be processed. (LINK) (Please reply “yes” and then exit the text message and re-open to activate the link, or copy the link and open it in your browser). Have a great day, DWP.”
PLEASE be careful and if in any doubt about the validity of any unusual text DO NOT open.
