It seems that the weather this winter has been generally cold, wet and grey. We have had the odd day of blue skies but the temperature has remained on the low side. So, how to keep warm without breaking the bank and turning up the heating. Here are a few suggestions: –

Warmer bedding. Choose flannel or fleece and use an electric blanket. Also, think about getting a higher tog duvet.

Warmer nightwear. Fleece pyjamas and dressing gowns

Hot water bottle. This may seem a little old-fashioned but if it stops cold feet who cares? Never use a hot water bottle with an electric blanket and if you are worried about it bursting then remove it after it has warmed the bed.

Use a rug, especially if you have hardwood floors to insulate and keep your feet warm when you leave your bed.

Open your curtains if it is a sunny day. The temperature outside may be low but sunshine streaming through your windows is a free way to heat your space. Be sure to close them when the sun goes down to retain the heat. You can also buy insulated curtain liners which will help to keep the heat in the room.

Draught excluders along doors and windows will help. You can make your own draft excluder using scrap material and old socks or tights to fill them.

Fingerless gloves are useful for keeping your hands warm but also allowing you to eat, cook, read and tackle most domestic chores.
